THE REFUGEE CAMP

Netherlands

07.17

On July 27, I went to a refugee camp situated nearby the town of Amersfoort, Netherlands.

The YMCA organisation is a global ecumenical movement, working for social justice for all youth. In 2016, Netherlands started to exchange experiences in their work with young refugees, asylum Seekers, internally displaced persons and migrants in their countries, and to explore new initiatives and new projects for future years.

One of their projects was to provide a summer camp for young refugees, giving them a chance to socialise, play, and finally enjoy their well-deserved childhood.

The children are between 6 and 10 years old. The majority tends to come from Syria. The country now contaminated by horror and despair where children are raised by the sound of bombs.

Many of them are orphanages; others simply had to leave behind their families to secure themselves a life.

What I found extraordinary though was that, despite all that had happened to those young creatures, I could still find happiness in their smiles, joy in their laughters and a sparkle of love for life in their eyes.
