Italy's population is shrinking, an increasing trend across Europe and no better region highlights the decline than Sardina where there are 0.95 births per woman, the lowest in Italy.

​

If the situation remains the same the Sardinian population could halve to 800,000 by 2050.

In contrast to the extremely low birth rate Sardinia is identified as a 'blue zone' - an area with a high number of people who are 100 or older.  
 
Louise Scott travels to the island to find out why young people are not having children and why so many are choosing to leave the Island for good. Plus she learns how this is affecting the wider Sardinian society and meets those fighting to save Sardinia from decline.
